(1) The snow remaining on the ground close to the end of snowmelt. Such a patchy, discontinuous snow cover is usually the result of slowly melting snow due to shading or areas of high accumulation. (2) An isolated mass of snow, especially one which persists through most or all of the ablation season (see also snezhnik).
